How to Repair a Leaky Roof with Liquid Rubber

All home owners have at some point of time worried about their roofs leaking. Nature’s relentless assault on the roof tends to cause a lot of damage. Additionally, the hot & cold cycles are brutal on the architecture.

Since concrete has poor thermal elasticity, the rapid weather transitions tend to pull the concrete apart & then mash it up against each other. This is referred to as Thermal expansion & contraction & happens due to temperature difference in the atmosphere. In the summer, due to the heat the concrete & the girders underneath expand. The opposite happens during the winter, where the concrete & the girders contract. Though this quite routine, effects of rapid temperature cycles can be minimized using liquid rubber coatings.

This problem of thermal expansion & problem is more pronounced on the roofs. Especially the flat roofs as they tend to catch more amounts of snow & water in the particular seasons & also being flat are under the direct assault of the sun overhead.

Hence it is very vital to use liquid rubber paint to paint the concrete on the roof. Liquid rubber is basically or technically not paint. It can be scientifically referred to as a protective coating. This coating has all the attributes to protect the concrete structure from damage due to the elements.

Liquid rubber paint is basically comprised of artificial or synthetic polymer materials that are kept in the liquid form. As with any coating, there is proper preparation required. However, we will discuss the same in later article.  For the time being, it is sufficient to look at how the liquid rubber can protect one’s home.

Once thorough preparation is over the liquid rubber paint is carefully applied onto the surface. Since the paint forms quite a thick layer, it takes some time for it to solidify. Subsequently another layer might be applied. This application is considered in two scenarios.

The first scenario is when the house is being constructed. Under such circumstances, lesser amount of liquid rubber paint will be required since concrete is undamaged or eroded by nature. Such fresh concrete is ideal for application of liquid rubber paint. This is because the cured concrete does not have much water trapped & the fresh porosity is ideal for the liquid rubber to penetrate & hold on to the surface. Such synergy between the liquid rubber paint & the concrete helps it keep sealed for a very long time. Additionally, the concrete is better protected from the elements. Ideally home owners should consider the use of liquid rubber paint when constructing their homes as a preventive measure.

The second scenario is when water has caused damage. The application of liquid rubber paint on a damaged concrete surface requires even more expertise & has to be carried out by experts only. One has to take into consideration many aspects. We will look into these too in subsequent articles.
